Birmingham needs a Saban-like War Room

Today’s guest columnist is Tom Cosby.

They say that Coach Saban has a “War Room” next to his office in Tuscaloosa.

Much like the White House Situation Room that tracks worldwide threats to our nation, in this room Saban reportedly tracks all the top high school athletes nationwide; some even internationally. Continue reading Birmingham needs a Saban-like War Room

A good friend of mine was lamenting that his daughter was getting ready to graduate from the University of Alabama, but was moving to Dallas to begin her career and would probably never come home. Continue reading Time for Birmingham to take advantage of Nick Saban

Nick Saban’s dream is Hoover’s nightmare

Okay…I’ve written about this before.

But it makes us look so DUMB that I’m going to write about it again.

And I’m going to write about it over and over until someone gets disgusted enough to do something about it.

Are we fools?

How can we be such suckers?

If you are a college football fan you may remember that between 1961 and 1965 UA won three NCAA College National Championships.

Joe Namath was our quarterback, but more importantly, our coach was the legendary Paul Bear Bryant.

No need to give a history lesson on Coach Bryant, but unless you’re of a certain age, you may not know one important fact about the Bear. Continue reading Birmingham: Bear Bryant may be turning over in his grave

Nick Saban proves we in Birmingham are a bunch of suckers

Coach Nick Saban
UA Football Coach Nick Saban

I must be nuts.

I’m actually writing an article that might be perceived as negative about the most popular and respected man in Alabama—maybe in Alabama history.

This story broke January 9th; about the same time Nick Saban and the UA football team won the National Championship—but wanting to show sensitivity to Saban worshipers (which include me), I waited until this week to publish. Should our self-worth hinge on Alabama football?

Alabama upset by Ole Miss
Alabama upset by Ole Miss

I love Alabama football.

I attended the University in the early ‘60’s when Bear Bryant was winning football games just as Nick Saban is today.  By the way–even the Bear lost a game or two every once in a while.

My claim to fame is that while eating at the Little Cookie, a burger joint in Tuscaloosa, Joe Namath asked me to pass the salt.

And I take great pride in our University’s growth. Continue reading Should our self-worth hinge on Alabama football?
