The dawn of 2026 was a rare wet morning on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California.
For only the 11th time in 137 years, rain fell on the Rose Parade. Still, the Homewood High School band persevered for every inch of the 5.5-mile route. We parents beamed even if the sun didn’t.

As an Ole Miss alum and avid football fan living in Birmingham, I kept hearing then-Alabama football Head Coach Nick Saban lament a recurring problem: fans, especially students, weren’t staying in the stadium for the full game. I was immediately struck by the natural beauty of the state, and having spent most of my short lifetime relocating often, I was excited and nervous to begin learning about my new home.
For all the right reasons, University of Alabama basketball is currently a hot topic.
