Every day, life seems to be moving faster. In order to keep up with the pace, I depend more and more on technology and services that streamline my on-the-go lifestyle.
As a CEO, a wife, and a mom of three, my time is not only valuable but scheduled down to the minute. I run my business and my household from my iPhone, multi-tasking while multi-tasking.
Prior to becoming a CEO and co-founder of a fast growing on-demand beauty company, I spent 17 years in the beauty and retail industries. I traveled the country working for Trish McEvoy and retail companies such as White House Black Market and Cache.
My time in these industries afforded so many connections to women in business. Women who were also in the work force. Women who also had families. Women who wanted quick solutions to beauty. I used those connections and the skills I learned to bring accessible beauty to my community.
My home and my garage became a beauty retreat for working moms. They could swing by on their way home from work or after the kids were in bed and get a spray tan. They could book appointments for hair styling and makeup that were quick and convenient. Saturday became “Beauty Day.”
As the word spread, my small network of women-on-the-go grew to over 150 regularly serviced clients. Date nights, vacations, proms, weddings — no occasion was too small for beauty.
Knowing I had the drive and skills to succeed as a businesswoman, my husband, Jim, pushed me to dream bigger. We talked about the why behind my current home business and what these women needed most. The answer… On-demand, on-the-go, quick, high quality beauty services. The solution…an app!
On-demand beauty services through an app
With that, GLOW was born.
As we began researching various markets, we realized Birmingham was the perfect location. Birmingham is where we’ve made our home, and we want to see our city grow. We want to see this Magic City become a hub for tech and for startup businesses in the South. With that, we launched GLOW here in November 2016.
GLOW has exceeded all expectations we had for growth. Not only has our number of beauty services nearly doubled, we launched GLOW in Nashville at the end of July. Through funding and support from the Velocity Accelerator program at Innovation Depot, we were able to take this dream that began in the Magic City to Music City. From here, it’s only full speed ahead.
My vision is to make on-demand beauty services accessible to women in markets all over the country. Charlotte, Austin, Atlanta, we’re coming for you!
Born in Puerto Rico, Yazmin’s family moved to the U.S. when she was just five years old. After studying Fashion Merchandising at Johnson & Wales University and spending several years traveling the country for work in the beauty and retail industries, Yaz moved to Birmingham to be closer to her mother. It is here that she found the love of her life, her faith, and ultimately where she found herself. She and her husband, Jim, have 3 children (James IV, Sofia, and Savanah) ages 3, 5, and 14.
